There are many different ways that people try to rip other people off. People are successfully scammed everyday and some of these scams are decades old. I would like to show you some common scams and how you might be able to avoid them.
- Telephone Scams- A very common scam is the telephone scam. There are many different pitches they could use to try and steal your money or identity. Some call and pretend to be the bank saying that your account has been compromised in some way and that they need your information to right the situation. Other scams include people calling pretending to offer you a job and saying they need your bank information for direct a deposit. To avoid these types of scams always ask for their number and tell them you will call them back. Then google the number to see if it is legit or not. Then find the number you are trying to call on the official website and call them back.
- Popup adds- There are a few different popup windows that will lock out your browser and say something like “The FBI has locked your computer and you must send X amount of money through Moneygram/Paypal to unlock your computer”. The FBI will never ask you to send them money through Moneygram or Paypal. To unlock your browser bring up the task manager by hitting CTRL+ALT+DELETE and then ending the browser process.
- Energy saving gadgets and different “miracle” appliances or technologies- DIfferent technologies and devices are sold on places like Ebay and Craigslist that claim to do things like cut your energy bill in half, double your gas mileage, increase your horsepower. These are almost always scams. Do avoid buying such products it is good to assume if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. Do your research and find websites that have researched products and can vouch for their authenticity.
